BIOGRAPHY OF MOHAMMED LAKHDAR-HAMINA
Before becoming a filmmaker, screenwriter and actor, Mohammed Lakhdar-Hamina had a rather chaotic childhood and schooling. He dropped out of the National Film Institute in Prague and devoted himself to practical work, especially shooting. In Tunisia, he became an operator on the filming of 'Yasmina', 'La Voix du peuple', and Djamel Chanderli's 'Les Fusils de la liberté'. He shot documents on the independence of Algeria after the Evian agreements of 1962, and then directed the National Cinematographic Office of the Film Industries (ONCIC) in Algeria. He directed the film 'Chronique des années de braise' which won the Palme d'or at the Cannes Film Festival in 1975. Le Vent des Aures' in 1967 won the prize for the first film on the Croisette. In 1982, 'Vent de sable' and 'La Dernière Image' in 1986, for which he also wrote the screenplay and dialogues, were in competition. In the 1960s, Mohammed Lakhdar-Hamina's films denounced the living conditions of Algerian women.
